The Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association (SCAVMA) is the governing body for student issues within the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia.

In addition, SCAVMA is a non-profit organization that funds most professional organizations and clubs within the college, such as the Canine Club, the student chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, and the Veterinary Business Management Association. SCAVMA sponsors seminars, speakers, conferences, and learning opportunities that enable students to enhance their education outside the classroom.

SCAVMA also provides annual scholarships for outstanding veterinary students. Most importantly, SCAVMA purchases new equipment for the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Georgia each year. For instance, SCAVMA purchased an underwater treadmill, new ultrasounds, endoscopy tools, and high-definition displays for the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Not only does SCAVMA provide resources that enhance student learning, this organization also enables the College of Veterinary Medicine to better serve the Athens community.

Organization

The vet school student body is represented by a Senate, with 10 members from each of the four class years, as well as an elected Executive Board. The Senate meets every other week to discuss current issues, student concerns and conduct business. All veterinary students are welcome to attend these meetings on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.
